Janey Godley: Nicola Sturgeon joins mourners at impressionist’s funeral | Ents and Art News

Mourners were paying their last respects at comedian Janey Godley’s funeral in Glasgow.

HE died earlier this month He is 63 years old after receiving palliative treatment for terminal cancer.

Reverend Kelvin Holdsworth began by telling the congregation that Godley would be remembered with “kindness and love” and added that “forgiveness” would be among the themes of the service.

Her daughter, Ashley Storrie, who is also a comedian, spoke during the service and said her mother “wanted me to headline her funeral” but “I couldn’t do any of her jokes because it was ‘God’s house’ and all that.”

“He was a comedian, that’s what he did first and foremost. He tried acting, hated it. He was a terrible singer. He couldn’t knit, so he tried. Photos of Liam Neeson with a hideous scarf prove it. But he was a comedian,” she added.

His voice breaking, he concluded by saying, “one last time… please put your hands together for my mother, Janey Godley.”

The congregation then stood up and continued with cheers and applause.

Gavin Mitchell, who played barman Bobby in TV sitcom Still Game, was among the mourners.

As the coffin was carried out of the church, a recording of Godley’s famous slogan was played to the congregation: “Frank, Open the Door.”

Godley’s coffin two day “last tour” related to Edinburgh and Glasgow, ahead of a private funeral service on Saturday.

Godley announced she had ovarian cancer in November 2021, but in 2022 the disease returned despite being told everything was fine.

He died in a Glasgow hospice on 2 November, shortly after being awarded an honorary degree from the University of Glasgow.

Godley, known for his stand-up career including several radio appearances and numerous TV appearances, has not been shy about openly discussing cancer or controversial topics.

He rose to international fame after protesting at Donald Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in 2018 with a banner that read “Trump is a c***.”
