‘Women must embrace authenticity, set healthy boundaries’ — Guardian Woman — The Guardian Nigeria News – Nigeria and World News

Ijeoma Nweze, popularly known as Amazin Ijeoma, is a psychotherapist, counselor, mentor, author and founder; Dance4HealthWellness is focused on helping people increase their self-confidence. In this interview with GERALDINE AKUTU, she shares her journey into counseling therapy and how women can succeed in a variety of jobs and careers.

What brought you to counseling therapy?

My journey into counseling psychotherapy is rooted in personal brokenness and transformation. While I have always had a passion for helping others, my initial approach often left me exhausted and emotionally drained. Realizing that my methods lacked proper foundation, I sought knowledge and training to help others more effectively. Through my life challenges and the support of a compassionate therapist, I have experienced the power of a safe space to process emotions and rediscover myself.

This transformative experience inspired me to create similar spaces for others, especially within my own community where stigma and judgment often deter people from seeking help. Just as physical health requires regular check-ups, mental health also needs the same attention to ensure general health. My therapy journey has taught me the value of self-reflection, healing, and growth. It also ignited a passion for helping others navigate their emotional landscapes, rebuild their self-confidence, and face life’s challenges.

Six years after starting my journey, I have become a qualified therapist, ready to offer the support I once received, providing a safe, confidential and compassionate environment where clients can share their experiences without fear of judgement. I see my role as a therapist not as giving advice but as being present, actively listening, offering silence, and validating feelings. Like a compassionate midwife to a woman in labor, a trained, empathetic counselor provides the support necessary for emotional healing and transformation. Counseling feels like a calling, a way to serve, empower, and guide others toward healing and wholeness. I take a holistic approach to therapy, combining creative expression, spirituality and emotional support; I help my clients find strength, resilience and well-being in their mind, body and spirit.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

The part of my job that I enjoy most is the privilege of witnessing personal transformation. It is a unique joy to see people find happiness, regain their confidence, and overcome challenges to discover their true selves. Being a part of their journey through therapy, mentoring, or coaching allows me to guide them as they heal, grow, and unlock their potential.
I am deeply satisfied when I see individuals regain a sense of self-worth, especially after experiencing pain, loss, or uncertainty. Helping them rediscover their identity or reconnect with their passions and purpose is incredibly rewarding. Watching someone grow, overcome self-doubt, and embrace their unique strengths is inspiring.

What should women do to be successful in their careers or businesses as a psychotherapist, counselor, mentor and coach?

Women must embrace authenticity, set healthy boundaries, and remain resilient. Success requires a willingness to learn, adapt, and believe in one’s abilities. My suggestion is this: In a world full of fraud, dishonesty and lies, the first step is to find out who you are and be unapologetically yourself. Speak only when necessary and share your information on a “need to know” basis. Focus on your growth, hone your skills, and leverage what you already have.

Journal your thoughts when inspiration strikes. Write down your vision and make it clear. It will become easier to understand your goals and take action to achieve them. If you don’t work on your vision, someone else who isn’t as talented will hire you to work on their vision, often paying less than you deserve, or worse, nothing at all. Choose your friends and business partners wisely. Surround yourself with people who inspire you and push you to do your best. Be around people who will lift you up and remind you that failure is not an option; Those who helped you emerge victorious are satisfied.

Forgive; Your path is a highway even before it begins, but it can be cluttered with vague thoughts and unforgiveness. Be responsible and accountable, avoid distractions, and reject anything or anyone that questions your values and sense of self.

How do you combine work and home front?

I can only do these things thanks to God’s grace and power. I wear many hats, and they all fit together so well: wife, mother, music minister, dance coach, counselor, therapist, writer, student, content creator, influencer, friend, sister, and daughter. This is a balance I constantly work on. Setting clear priorities, setting boundaries, and knowing when to recharge was key. My family has been a constant source of support and inspiration, so maintaining that connection is crucial to both my personal and professional well-being. Finding harmony in my roles allows me to do my best in every aspect of my life by staying grounded and focused.

Are you working on anything new?

Yes I am! A lot has changed for me and for me. As we move forward and navigate this new beginning, I am excited to work on a variety of projects, including music, video presentations, my consulting practice, advanced training, and new book titles centered around the theme of reinvention and supporting others. One of my most recently released albums, a special birthday present, was a single by Amazin Ijeoma and Glorie Zina (Mum&Bae) called “Jehovah El-Shalom”, featuring my daughter. I will also be releasing a new single called “My Offer of Praise” from Amazin Ijeoma on December 1, 2024. Each of these projects allows me to explore new creative expressions while staying true to the themes of transformation, resilience, and healing.
