Roseanna said: “For all the good he did, his kindness and he never let cancer define him. “He never saw himself as having a disability.

“His whole goal was to get back to some kind of normalcy, get back on the field and play his camouflage.”

Roseanna also opened up about how their youngest daughter, Farrah-Rose, has helped them through this extremely difficult time.

He said: “I guess it’s only now that I realize he wasn’t sent to be Saoyse’s sister, he was actually sent to carry us.

“Because if I didn’t get him out of bed in the morning, I wouldn’t be in as good a shape as I am now.

“He actually deserves as normal a childhood as we can give him.

“So we’re going to do the same thing for Farrah-Rose that we did to make memories for Saoirse, because she deserves it.”

Ollie also touched on the incredible support the family has received since Saoirse’s passing.

He admitted: “I don’t think we realized how much support we had until the news broke and it came to the fore. RTE that morning.

“I think it helped us too, knowing that so many people loved Saoirse. It was comforting for us.”

Donations have officially started a week early for the annual charity appeal, which has seen Irish people donate in record numbers over the past four years.

Saoyse raised millions charity Following the Toy Show Appeal, Patrick said the “touch paper he lit” would continue to brighten the lives of many children.

RTE viewers were left emotional following the interview with Roseanna and Ollie Ruane.

RTE launched a brand new grant this year called the Saoirse Ruane Grant.

The grant award of €150,000 was awarded in Saoyse’s name and will be donated to a chosen charity.

“We are so grateful for the support of our viewers over the last four years, whose generosity enables RTE to continue to make a positive difference to the lives of thousands of children and their families in the north and south of the island.

“I am particularly pleased to see the announcement of the Saoyse Ruane Donations in honor of Saoyse and the launch of donations to the RTE Toy Show Appeal a week earlier this year.

“Saoirse will be remembered as someone who made a positive and lasting impact on us all.

“His memory lives on through the RTE Toy Show Attraction and the many young lives he transformed.”
