Missing woman Hannah Kobayashi intentionally skipped flight, LAPD chief says

Three weeks after a Hawaiian woman went missing in Los Angeles, her family is vowing to continue investigating the puzzling disappearance amid disturbing text messages.

Surveillance videos showed him at a Los Angeles shopping mall and train station, and a flurry of strange messages and online payments have since added to the mystery behind his disappearance.

On Tuesday, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said police determined Kobayashi intentionally hijacked his plane.

“Our hearts go out to the Kobayashi family during this time of unimaginable pain,” McDonnell said at the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners meeting. “We are fully committed to locating Hannah and supporting the family as they recover from this tragedy.”

The LAPD did not respond Friday to USA TODAY’s request for further updates on the investigation. USA TODAY also reached out to an organization representing the family.

Who is Hannah Kobayashi?

What did Kobayashi do after missing the plane?

The LA Times reported that a day after missing his flight, Kobayashi went to a bookstore at The Grove shopping center in Los Angeles’ Fairfax District. Her aunt told the newspaper that she sent a photo of a book to a relative. The family then used the data from the photo to go to the bookstore and confirm that he was there and had filled out a newsletter form.

According to CNN, he sent two payments via Venmo to two people his family did not know. Police said he remained active on Instagram.

About the text messages before they disappeared

After Kobayashi missed his flight, the family began receiving alarming text messages, his family and police said. The messages were out of character from Kobayashi, his aunt Larie Pidgeon told USA TODAY. These included odd emoticons and a lack of emojis.

According to CNN, Kobayashi said in his messages that he did not feel safe. He texted that someone was trying to steal his money and identity. In another text, CNN reported, he wrote that he was “tricked” into giving away all his money. “For someone I thought I loved,” a follow-up message read.

CBS reported that in one of his messages he said he had completed a “very intense spiritual awakening” and was heading back to the airport but “may need some help getting there.”

The last day his family contacted him was November 11. screenshots of text messages Shared with USA TODAY, Kobayashi said he was heading to the airport.

“I have a safe passage,” he said, and “I’ll keep you informed,” then added “Matrix style.”

In follow-up messages, she said, “I’m safe,” “I love you,” “Don’t worry,” “For everyone’s sake,” “I’ll keep you informed,” “Promise,” and “I’ll call you soon.”

On November 11, security cameras showed Kobayashi at LAX, but he never boarded the plane. Pidgeon said he spoke with an American Airlines representative sometime after 4:30 p.m.

His phone was last turned on at LAX around that time.

Where was Kobayshi last seen?

Security camera footage was captured of Kobayashi in downtown Los Angeles that night. He was at the Pico Metro light rail station near the Crypto.com Arena with an unidentified person.

On November 12, Kobayashi’s family said they filed a missing person report. LAPD declared it Missing person on November 15.

The search for Kobayashi attracted great attention online and in Los Angeles. volunteers organized groups to search for him on the streets.

Days later, police found his father, Ryan Kobayashi, dead in a parking lot near LAX on November 24. Ryan had been searching for his daughter for nearly two weeks around Los Angeles.

The family confirmed that he died by suicide. Police Chief McDonnell said initial findings indicate the incident was a suicide.

Pidgeon told USA TODAY that the final weeks were already difficult before she learned of her brother-in-law’s sudden death.

“He died of a broken heart,” Pidgeon said. “Being on the streets and seeing the possibilities of where her daughter could be. No sleep. Rumors of speculation floating around. It took a toll on her.”
